I was shocked and disappointed this evening to hear of the unexpected death of Dame Anita Roddick (64) who created The Body Shop. She died of a brain hemorrhage after collapsing at her family home yesterday.
The news was announced about 10 minutes ago before me writing this.
Dame Roddick had been interviewed in last weekend papers about how happy she was with the sale of Body Shop to L'Oreal despite people accusing her of selling out her values. She was happy as she was working within L'Oreal to champion and help them to shift to more ethical marketing and sourcing across all their businesses (and said she was amazed at how fast that was having an effect). She was also happy as she was managing spending her personal gain on worthy causes and projects.
Anita Roddick was an amazing marketing person. She had a powerful belief and believed that you succeed by doing the right thing and you change things by leading by example. I admire her guts and I admire her marketing skills. She is a force for good that will be missed. Imagine what she could have done of she had lived to the average age of 84? I hope that L'Oreal make sure Body Shop make sure it does.
