At the Richmond Events Marketing Forum on-board the P and O Arcadia ship last month, Sir Clive Woodward spoke through his theory on how you make strong teams that win, be they sports or business teams.
He had 4 quotes that I found really interesting and thought provoking. 3 were his and the last from a sporting icon.
The quotes were:
1. "Great teams are made of great individuals". So you need to make each person on the team the very best at what they do, and then you can have a great team.
2. "It's what you learn after you think you know it all that counts". Once people think they are stopping learning, you have a huge problem.
3. "Winners perform at their best when the pressure is greatest". One thing he spoke at length about was what he called "T-cup" (Thinking calmly under pressure) moments. He spoke how when he manages teams he spends huge amounts of times setting up impossible and challenging situations that could happen and get people to work out what they do, and to keep doing it until the team agree and all agree. So when things happen people know what they have to do.
4. The last quote was from Muhammad Ali who said champions "have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill"
Thought provoking stuff....
